How Mental Health and Cleaning Are Connected

Being stuck in one place due to the pandemic can be very stressful, tiring and anxiety provoking. During this time, it’s completely valid and normal to feel lazy, unmotivated, and experience a rollercoaster of emotions! Gaining control over your environment, can be incredibly liberating.

Clutter makes it more difficult to relax, both physically and mentally, because it signals your brains that the work is never done!

The current health crisis has forced us to be confined, feeling a lack of control over our lives. However, it’s very empowering and uplifting to take advantage of what you DO have control over, including your home environment. There are numerous health benefits that are associated with cleaning and organising your space.

Since we are ‘cooped up’ in one space most of the time, it’s more crucial than ever to organise your space and make it very efficient and organised. The process of doing this, even simply by ridding the clutter, can be very freeing!

Often a cluttered or messy area can be seen as “unfinished business,” whether consciously or unconsciously and it adds unnecessary stress. The process of cleaning up and sorting through “the to do list”, by throwing away or donating things that no longer bring joy, will have considerable mental health benefits.

The process of organising will leave you feeling satisfied, productive and accomplished and it will undoubtedly increase your positive energy levels.

You may discover lost, forgotten or old items that you previously cherished, allowing you to reflect and remember important times in your life.

Getting organised will leave you feeling lighter, as if a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. Clutter and disorder triggers avoidance and further lack of productivity and boredom, resulting in snacking in front of the TV, gaining weight and feeling depressed.

So, use this time to sort through your home and get organised. Take small steps and break it down into sizeable chunks. You don’t need to finish it all in one day. You will feel as if your home is ‘new’ and ‘fresh’ again and that will lift your spirits and feelings of satisfaction, having achieved your goal!
