😟 Shame is felt when you judge yourself negatively, e.g. If you feel that you are a bad, weak or useless person, you could feel a sense of deep shame.
😟 Guilt is felt when you consider your behaviour as negative, e.g. If you fail to pay back money that you borrowed from someone, you could feel a sense of guilt if you consider your actions to be wrong.

😟 Shame often follows traumatic events or if, whilst growing up, you were repeatedly told (or made to feel) that you were bad or useless.

Chronic pain can be very debilitating, as it negatively impacts our ability to exercise, do household chores, work, be intimate, socialise, or concentrate. Chronic pain can cause or worsen depression; it intensifies anxiety due to fear of anything we do potentially worsen our pain. A multimodal approach is the best way to manage chronic pain and helpful strategies include stress reduction, breathing and meditation, gentle exercise, yoga, psychological therapy, massage and limiting alcohol and illicit substances. Certain antidepressants can also help to improve pain symptoms. Trauma triggers our body’s alarm system which activates a fight, flight or freeze response. Sometimes, without adequate processing and healing, our body gets stuck in these responses, causing persistent feelings of hyperarousal and jitteriness. We can become ‘set off’ by even minor events.
In many ways, unmanaged trauma ‘lives’ in our body. Trauma-informed yoga works to control the body’s stress response and calms the nervous system, allowing for self-regulation through breathing and acclimatising to the body’s sensations. Severe IBS (irritable bowl syndrome) can worsen the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Equally, IBS can be exacerbated by symptoms of anxiety and depression. Depression can make us more sensitive to pain, making any IBS symptoms feel worse. When we are depressed or anxious, we may be less likely to eat healthily or exercise, all of which could improve our IBS symptoms. Our bodies and minds are closely linked, and it is important, at all times, to take care of both. If you are struggling with IBS symptoms (bloating, pain, diarrhoea or constipation), first consult a doctor to exclude any underlying, causative GIT issues. Have you realised how impossible it is to think clearly when your emotions are heightened? You are not alone! Recovery from emotional trauma takes time. We seem to honour this need for time when referring to repairing from a physical injury or procedure. Negative emotions are generally unpleasant and most of us would prefer not to have to experience heartache, anger, frustration, irritability and hatred. However, negative emotions provide the contrast that highlights and intensifies our positive feelings. Many negative emotions help steer our choices, keeping us safe and away from situations or people that are potentially harmful. Because we can't selectively disconnect from emotion, trying to switch off our negative feelings may result in complete numbness and disassociation, which is frequently more unpleasant. We need to learn to tolerate our feelings - making them visitors to our bodies, knowing that often visitors can be unwanted and unpleasant - but they do leave! A time to reflect. With the war in the Ukraine presently, today is certainly a very sad day, as we see first hand the devastation that accompanies war. Children who are on the autism spectrum will seem resistant to doing many things. This opposition should be considered thoughtfully as it’s more likely to be that these children feel they can’t do what has been asked of them. The reasons for this may be varied e.g they don’t understand the instruction, they find the particular task overwhelming (especially sensory overwhelm), they lack the skills (fine or gross motor or social skills) are anxious, afraid to fail and disappoint you. It’s important to help these children (or any child) to learn new tasks. Teaching a task, doesn’t mean that your child has learnt it. Medication definitely has its place in the treatment of any mental health disorder. It’s important to understand that role when deciding to use medication and to have clear plans and goals of treatment and an understanding of time frames to improvement and the risks and benefits of use. Have a discussion with your doctor or mental health professional, who can guide your decision, allowing you to make an informed decision. In mental health, as with any physical health condition, medication is used to manage rather than ‘fix’ a problem. Using medication doesn’t equate to weakness. A diabetic might eat well and exercise, yet still need to take medication. Despite knowing the strategies to manage your mood or anxiety for example, it may be impossible to use these when symptoms are too severe. As humans, we hurt ourselves in many ways. This may be through actions or harsh and very critical inner dialogue. Self-destructive behaviours may be repetitive and a means of self-sabotage, occurring (unconsciously or consciously) when we are doing well or success is imminent but we fail to trust it. Self-harm can be soothing and releasing of difficult emotions, it can combat feelings of numbness or be a form of self-punishment when feelings of ‘badness’ arise within. Everybody communicates through their actions. An infant may cry when they are hungry, just like an adult may become quiet when they are unhappy. Adults and children are communicating something through their behavior during every moment in every day, even if they are not aware of it. If children or adults feel unheard, insecure, angry or invalidated, their behaviours may become ‘louder’ (very intense and frequent) and more negative, harmful or self-destructive. Complicated grief is a DSM disorder . It’s said to be when grief lingers, gets worse or remains intense and to the extent that it keeps you from healing. Complicated grief may be considered when the intensity of grief has not decreased in the months after your loved one's death. Some professionals diagnose complicated grief when grieving continues to be intense, persistent and debilitating beyond 12 months. Risk factors for developing complicated grief include: An unexpected or violent death, such as death from a car accident, or the murder or suicide of a loved one
Death of a child
Close or dependent relationship to the deceased person
Social isolation or loss of a support system or friendships
Past history of depression, separation anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Traumatic childhood experiences, such as abuse or neglect
Other major life stressors, such as major financial hardships. As someone who has suffered traumatic loss and as a psychiatrist, I struggle to compartmentalise these concepts and know that grief is an enduring process that fluctuates and can be worse at certain times.
