Dr Kieran Owens (BA (hons I) / MBBS, MIT (AI), FRANZCP, Cert. Old Age Psych.) is a General Adult and Old Age Psychiatrist. He works with his patients to develop personalised, evidence-based treatment plans that incorporate lifestyle, psychotherapy, medication, and/or interventional treatments.
Kieran treats adults aged 18 years and over. His clinical interests comprise mood disorders, such as major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder; prolonged grief disorder (PGD); anxiety disorders, such as generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder; old age psychiatry, including cognitive disorders, dementia, and patients with frailty or complex medical conditions; neuropsychiatry, including psychiatric complications of conditions like encephalitis and brain injury; sleep disorders, such as insomnia, parasomnias, and REM sleep behaviour disorder (RBD); and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and related conditions such as skin picking and trichotillomania.
Kieran obtained his medical degree from the University of New South Wales. He trained in psychiatry at Prince of Wales Hospital, St George Hospital, and Westmead Hospital, and he undertook subspecialty training in psychiatry of old age. He was the recipient of a HETI Psychiatry Special Training Award that funded a fellowship at the Black Dog Institute involving training and research in interventional treatments like TMS, ketamine, and ECT.
Prior to psychiatry, Kieran completed four years of hospital training in general and emergency medicine. This background helps him to care for patients with mental health issues that interact with or stem from general medical conditions. He holds an undergraduate degree in philosophy and a master’s degree in artificial intelligence. Alongside his clinical work, he is completing a PhD within the School of Physics at the University of Sydney on the time-series analysis of non-stationary processes, with applications to brain dynamics during sleep.
